Opening Sussex RunFest with a Race Day Simulation Guided Meditation
Being invited to Sussex RunFest was a real honour.
I was asked to open the weekend festival with a Race Day Simulation Guided Meditation — a session created to help runners mentally prepare for race day, connect with confidence, and practise feeling calm before stepping onto the start line.
As someone who works with both hypnotherapy and endurance mindset, this felt like such a meaningful way to begin a weekend dedicated to running, movement, community, and personal challenge.
Why Race Day Mindset Matters
Race day is rarely just physical.
Of course, training matters. The miles matter. The strength work, the fuelling, the recovery, the kit, the pacing — all of it matters.
But when race day arrives, your mind comes with you too.
The nerves.
The excitement.
The doubt.
The comparison.
The pressure.
The emotion of finally standing at the start line after weeks or months of preparation.
That is why mental rehearsal can be so powerful.
It gives your mind and body a chance to practise the experience before it happens. Not by pretending everything will be perfect, but by preparing for the real race day: the waiting, the noise, the unknowns, the emotional moments, and the places where you may need to come back to yourself.
A Room Full of Runners
There were around 30 people in the room for the session.
Together, we moved through a guided race day visualisation: arriving at the event, standing at the start, connecting with the body, moving through different stages of the race, and practising how to respond if nerves, doubt, or fatigue appeared.
The focus was not on chasing a perfect performance.
It was about building trust.
Trust in the training.
Trust in the body.
Trust in the ability to meet the moment.
Trust that one difficult section does not define the whole race.
Trust that you can come back to your breath, your rhythm, and your own inner steadiness.
Goosebumps, Tears and Self-Trust
Afterwards, people shared that the meditation had given them goosebumps.
Some said it brought them to tears — but not in a sad way. These were emotional, positive tears. The kind that can appear when something suddenly feels real. When the nerves soften. When the excitement rises. When you remember how much this goal means to you.
For some people, it was the emotion of imagining themselves at the start line. For others, it was the feeling of crossing the finish, trusting their body, or realising that they were more ready than they thought.
That is exactly why I love this work.
Because race day is rarely just about the race.
It can hold months of training, early mornings, setbacks, doubts, courage, hope, and the quiet commitment it took to keep going. When you finally pause long enough to connect with all of that, emotion can rise to the surface.
And often, that emotion is not weakness.
It is pride.
It is excitement.
It is relief.
It is self-trust beginning to land.
People shared that the session helped them feel more confident, more grounded, and more trusting in themselves.
Not because they had forced themselves to be fearless, but because they had reconnected with something deeper:
“I have prepared for this.”
“I can do hard things.”
“I can take this one step at a time.”
“I can trust myself.”
More Than Positive Thinking
Race day mindset work is not about pretending nerves do not exist.
It is not about telling yourself everything will be easy.
And it is definitely not about ignoring your body.
It is about creating a calmer internal response, so that when race day arrives, you have tools to return to.
This might include:
grounding techniques before the start
calming anchors during the race
visualisation for key race moments
breathwork to regulate nerves
personalised phrases or affirmations
mental rehearsal for difficult sections
reconnecting with your “why”
The aim is to feel more prepared, more present, and more able to respond to the experience as it unfolds.
Imagine What Could Be Possible With a Personalised Session
The Sussex RunFest meditation was a group experience, and even within that shared setting, people felt something shift.
So imagine what could be possible in a personalised Race Day Mindset Hypnotherapy Session created specifically for you, your event, your fears, your goals, your training, and your own inner voice.
In a one-to-one session, we can explore what race day brings up for you personally.
Maybe it is nerves at the start line.
Maybe it is fear of not finishing.
Maybe it is pressure around a time goal.
Maybe it is self-doubt.
Maybe it is the emotional weight of the challenge.
Maybe it is learning how to stay calm when the race gets hard.
Together, we can create a personalised visualisation, practical anchoring techniques, and a hypnotherapy recording you can listen to in the lead-up to your event.
Race Day Mindset Hypnotherapy
If you are preparing for a race, marathon, ultra, triathlon, or another meaningful challenge, hypnotherapy may help you feel calmer, more focused, and more mentally prepared.
The goal is not to remove every nerve.
The goal is to help you trust yourself more deeply.
To arrive at race day feeling grounded.
To reconnect with your training.
To remember why this matters.
To know that you have tools to come back to when your mind gets loud.
If a guided group meditation can create goosebumps, tears, and a stronger sense of self-trust, imagine what a personalised session could support.
