Hypnotherapy for Marathon Confidence: An Edinburgh Marathon Client Story

The Starting Point

A client in their early 60s came to Rooted Calm around six weeks before the Edinburgh Marathon. They had trained consistently, but marathon training had become mentally and physically demanding. At times, running had started to feel more like a chore than something they enjoyed, and they felt disconnected from the deeper “why” behind it.

What They Wanted Support With

The main focus was not about chasing a finish time. The biggest priorities were that they could enjoy running again, stay healthy and injury-free, and arrive at race day feeling calm, confident, and prepared.

Reconnecting With the Joy of Running

In our session, we focused on the mental and emotional side of running: trusting the training, managing nerves, reducing pressure, and building a calmer connection with the body before race day. A big part of the work was helping the client reconnect with their passion, motivation, and joy for running.

Creating Practical Tools for Race Day

We explored anchoring techniques they could use during training and on race day, helping them reconnect with a feeling of calm, strength, and self-trust when doubts or nerves appeared. After the session, they also received a personalised hypnotherapy recording to listen to in the weeks leading up to the marathon.

The Aim of the Session

The aim was never perfection. It was about helping them feel more grounded, steady, and able to enjoy the experience without putting unnecessary pressure on themselves.

The Outcome

They went on to complete the Edinburgh Marathon successfully and injury-free.

Reflection

Their journey is a powerful example of how hypnotherapy can support the mindset side of endurance events — helping someone reconnect with confidence, enjoyment, and trust in themselves, while remembering that feeling well and enjoying the journey matters far more than any finish time.
