Hypnotherapy for London Marathon Preparation: Staying Calm, Focused, and Present on Race Day

This anonymised client story was shared with permission. Identifying details have been removed or changed to protect confidentiality. Every person’s experience is different, and hypnotherapy does not guarantee a specific outcome.

A client came to Rooted Calm while preparing for the London Marathon.

This was not only a personal running challenge. They were also running for charity and had raised a significant amount of money for a cause that mattered deeply to them.

Because of this, race day carried a lot of meaning.

There was excitement, pride and purpose — but also the natural pressure that can come with a big event, a large crowd, a charity place, and the emotional weight of wanting the day to go well.

What They Wanted Support With

The focus of the work was race day preparation.

The client had already been training physically. What they wanted support with was the mental and emotional side of the marathon: feeling calm, staying focused, managing the energy of the day, and being able to enjoy the experience without becoming overwhelmed.

The London Marathon is a huge event. The crowds, noise, travel, waiting, excitement and emotion can all feel intense. Even when someone is well prepared, the atmosphere alone can bring up nerves, pressure and self-doubt.

Our sessions focused on helping the client feel grounded, prepared and connected to themselves before and during the race.

Rehearsing Race Day in Detail

Across the sessions, we used hypnotherapy and guided visualisation to mentally rehearse the whole race day experience.

This included getting ready, travelling to the start, arriving in the start area, managing the waiting time, hearing the noise and energy around them, and beginning the race feeling steady and focused.

We also worked through key points of the marathon route, including meaningful mile markers and moments the client wanted to feel prepared for.

Rather than only visualising the finish line, we explored the whole journey.

The aim was to help the client’s mind and body feel as though they had already practised the experience before race day arrived.

Staying Calm in the Energy of the Crowd

A big part of the work was helping the client prepare for the atmosphere of the London Marathon.

Crowd support can be incredible, but it can also feel intense. Noise, excitement and emotion can sometimes make it harder to stay connected to your own rhythm.

Through the sessions, we explored how the client could receive the energy of the crowd without becoming overwhelmed by it.

We worked on staying calm, grounded and present, while still allowing the joy and support of the day to be part of the experience.

The focus was not on shutting the world out. It was about helping the client stay connected to themselves within it.

Creating Personalised Tools

Alongside the visualisation, the client received personalised hypnotherapy recordings to listen to in the lead-up to the marathon.

These recordings helped reinforce the work we had done together, giving them a way to return to the feeling of calm, confidence and self-trust before race day.

We also worked with practical mindset tools and inner reminders they could use during the marathon if nerves, tiredness or emotion appeared.

The aim was to help them remember:

This is my race.
I can stay with my rhythm.
I can take this one section at a time.
I can feel the emotion and still feel steady.
I can enjoy this.

The Outcome

The client went on to complete the London Marathon successfully.

They raised a significant amount of money for charity, ran the whole marathon, and most importantly, were able to enjoy the experience.

The preparation helped them arrive at race day feeling calmer, more focused and more connected to their own sense of purpose.

Rather than being overwhelmed by the scale of the event, they were able to move through it with steadiness, confidence and presence.

Reflection

This client story is a powerful example of how hypnotherapy can support race day preparation.

Physical training matters, of course. But race day is also emotional. It can bring up nerves, excitement, pressure, memories, meaning, self-doubt, pride and hope.

Hypnotherapy can help runners mentally rehearse the day ahead, practise responding calmly to key moments, and build practical tools they can return to when the energy of the event feels big.

For this client, the work was about more than getting to the finish line.

It was about feeling prepared enough to enjoy the journey.

The Client’s Reflection one year later

“A year on, I still find myself looking at my London Marathon medal and thinking, ‘Did I really do that? Did I really run the London Marathon, enjoy every step and finish injury-free?’ And yes, I did!

We often focus so much on training plans and nutrition that we forget how important the mental journey is, too. Tamara helped me prepare mentally throughout my training, but most importantly, for race day itself. It became a day filled with wonderful memories, joy and a sense of achievement that I’m still incredibly proud of.

If you're unsure what kind of support you need, I wholeheartedly recommend speaking to Tamara. She's honest, caring and genuinely wants what's best for you. She'll help you find the right approach and support you along the way. Thank you, Tamara, for being part of such a special journey!”
