Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying

Fear of flying can be incredibly frustrating, especially when part of you wants to travel, visit loved ones, go on holiday, or take an important trip — but another part of you feels overwhelmed by the idea of the airport, the plane, the height, the lack of control, turbulence, or feeling trapped.

Hypnotherapy can be a supportive way to work with fear of flying because it helps the mind and body rehearse a different experience before the day arrives.

In sessions, we usually begin by understanding what part of flying feels most difficult for you. For some people, it is the take-off. For others, it is turbulence, heights, panic sensations, being enclosed, or the anticipation in the days and weeks before travelling.

Once we know what your fear is connected to, we can begin creating practical tools. These may include a safe place visualisation, breathing techniques, calming anchors, and guided imagery to help you feel more grounded.

Later sessions can include a gentle flight visualisation, where you mentally rehearse the journey step by step: packing, travelling to the airport, checking in, boarding, take-off, the flight itself, landing, and arriving. This is always done at your pace, with a focus on safety, steadiness, and control.

The aim is not to pretend that flying is suddenly your favourite thing. The aim is to help your nervous system feel more prepared, more supported, and less hijacked by fear.

Many clients also find it helpful to have personalised recordings to listen to before travelling. These recordings can reinforce the calming work we do in sessions and give you something familiar to return to in the lead-up to your flight.

I offer hypnotherapy for fear of flying online and in person in Dorset. If you have a flight coming up, it can be helpful to begin several weeks beforehand, so we have time to build your tools gradually.

Fear of flying can feel very big, but you do not have to approach it alone. Together, we can help you build calm, confidence, and practical strategies for your journey.
