What Is a Safe Place Visualisation?

A safe place visualisation is one of the most gentle and supportive tools we can use in hypnotherapy.

It involves creating an inner place in your imagination where you can feel calmer, steadier, and more supported. This place might be somewhere real, somewhere imagined, somewhere in nature, or somewhere completely symbolic. There is no right or wrong version.

For one person, a safe place might be a quiet beach. For another, it might be a forest, a cosy room, a garden, a mountain cabin, or a peaceful lake. What matters is not how impressive the image is. What matters is how it feels.

During hypnotherapy, we build this place slowly using the senses. What can you see? What colours are there? What is the light like? What can you hear? Is there a breeze, warmth, water, birdsong, silence, or a sense of stillness? What can you feel beneath your feet or around your body?

The more sensory the safe place becomes, the easier it can be for the mind and body to return to it.

A safe place visualisation can be especially helpful for anxiety, emotional overwhelm, fears and phobias, grief, stress, and moments when you feel disconnected from yourself. It becomes a resource you can practise during sessions and then return to between sessions through your personalised recording.

This does not mean ignoring difficult feelings. A safe place is not about pushing anything away or pretending everything is fine. It is about giving your nervous system somewhere to rest, even for a few moments.

Over time, the safe place can become familiar. Familiarity can create steadiness. And steadiness can make it easier to meet difficult moments with more support.

In my hypnotherapy sessions, I often begin with safe place work because it gives us a foundation. Before exploring deeper patterns or specific fears, it helps to know that there is somewhere calm and supportive your mind can return to.

Your safe place belongs to you. It can grow with you, change with you, and support you in different ways at different times.

Sometimes healing begins with having somewhere inside yourself where you can finally breathe.
