Talking Therapy vs Hypnotherapy: What's the Difference?
Two different approaches, one shared purpose: supporting you in understanding yourself and creating meaningful change.
If you've ever considered seeking therapeutic support, you may have wondered about the difference between talking therapy and hypnotherapy.
Do they work in similar ways? Do you have to talk about your past? Will you be asked to close your eyes? And how do you know which approach might be right for you?
These are all perfectly reasonable questions.
As a qualified hypnotherapist and soon-to-be qualified integrative counsellor, I'm often reminded that there isn't one single way to approach emotional wellbeing.
We all have different experiences, needs and preferences. What feels helpful to one person may not feel right for another.
That's why I'm particularly excited to share that from November 2026, I expect to begin offering integrative counselling alongside hypnotherapy at Rooted Calm, subject to completing my final qualification requirements.
But first, let's explore what makes these two approaches different.
What Is Talking Therapy?
Talking therapy, or counselling, offers a confidential, supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, experiences and relationships.
At its heart is the therapeutic relationship.
Rather than being given instructions about what you should do or how you should feel, you're invited to explore what's happening in your life with someone who listens without judgement.
A counselling session is primarily conversation-based.
We might explore how you're feeling, recognise recurring patterns, reflect on past experiences or consider how relationships and life events have shaped your understanding of yourself.
There doesn't always need to be a clearly defined goal.
Sometimes people come to counselling because something feels difficult, confusing or overwhelming, but they aren't quite sure why.
And that's okay.
Counselling gives us the opportunity to explore those feelings together, at your pace.
What Can Talking Therapy Help With?
People seek counselling for many different reasons, including:
Grief, loss and bereavement
Relationships and family difficulties
Self-worth and self-image
Anxiety and difficult emotions
Life transitions and changes
Past experiences that continue to affect the present
Feeling stuck, disconnected or unsure of what comes next
Talking therapy isn't about someone telling you how to live your life.
It's about creating a space where you can feel heard, better understand yourself and begin exploring what matters to you.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a little different.
While talking is still an important part of our work together, a hypnotherapy session isn't only about conversation.
At Rooted Calm, we begin by exploring what you'd like support with, what you're experiencing and what you would like to feel or do differently.
From there, I create a personalised session around your needs and goals.
During the hypnotherapy itself, you're invited to sit or lie somewhere comfortable, close your eyes if you wish, and listen as I guide you through relaxation, visualisation and therapeutic suggestions.
You remain aware and in control throughout.
You don't need to fall asleep, switch off your thoughts or achieve a particular depth of relaxation for the experience to be meaningful.
And you certainly won't be made to do anything against your wishes.
The process is collaborative, even when you're resting quietly and listening.
What Might We Work On During Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy can be used to support a range of goals and difficulties, including:
Managing stress and anxiety
Building confidence and self-trust
Working with specific fears or phobias
Developing healthier habits
Supporting relaxation and sleep
Preparing mentally for challenging events
Exploring unhelpful emotional or behavioural patterns
For example, someone experiencing anxiety before an important event might benefit from mentally rehearsing that situation while practising a calmer response.
Or someone who finds themselves reacting automatically in stressful moments might work on creating a pause between the trigger and their response.
This is where hypnotherapy becomes particularly practical.
Hypnotherapy Is More Than Relaxation
One of the things I particularly enjoy about hypnotherapy is that we can create practical tools to use beyond the therapy room.
These might include anchors, which are simple physical movements or cues associated with a calmer or more confident state.
For example, gently bringing two fingers together while practising relaxation and repeating a personally meaningful affirmation.
With repetition, this can become a familiar reminder to pause, breathe and reconnect with the response you're working towards.
We might also use visualisation, guided imagery, positive mental rehearsal and personalised recordings.
The idea isn't that one session magically changes everything.
It's that we can begin practising different responses and gradually make them more familiar.
And because every person is different, the techniques are tailored to you rather than following a one-size-fits-all script.
So, What's the Main Difference?
Although there can be considerable overlap, I often describe the distinction like this:
Talking therapy creates space to explore, understand and process.
You do most of the talking, while I listen, reflect, ask questions and support you in exploring your experiences.
Hypnotherapy combines conversation with guided therapeutic exercises.
We explore your goals together, and then you can relax and listen while I guide you through personalised visualisations, suggestions and mental rehearsal. We may also develop practical techniques to use in everyday life.
Of course, these are simplified descriptions.
Counselling can be goal-focused and practical, and hypnotherapy can involve meaningful emotional exploration.
Neither approach is inherently better.
What matters is finding support that feels appropriate for you.
Do I Need to Talk About My Past?
This is another question people sometimes have.
And the answer is: not necessarily.
In talking therapy, past experiences may naturally become part of the conversation, particularly if they continue to influence how you feel or relate to yourself and others.
But we don't have to explore everything immediately, and you're always able to decide what feels comfortable to share.
Hypnotherapy at Rooted Calm is generally more forward-focused.
We often begin with the question:
What would you like to feel or experience differently?
However, we can still acknowledge and explore past experiences where doing so feels appropriate and helpful.
Both approaches are shaped around your needs, your pace and your comfort.
Why I'm Bringing Counselling to Rooted Calm
I'm delighted to share another exciting step in my professional journey.
Alongside my work as a qualified hypnotherapist, I've been studying integrative counselling, and I'm now in the final stages of my qualification.
I'm currently writing up my final case study — one of the last steps before completing my training.
I expect to be fully qualified in November 2026, when I plan to begin offering counselling sessions alongside hypnotherapy, subject to successful completion of my qualification.
For me, this feels like a natural extension of Rooted Calm.
My approach has always been grounded in compassion, mindfulness, curiosity and the belief that meaningful change looks different for everyone.
Training as an integrative counsellor has allowed me to deepen my understanding of the therapeutic relationship and explore different psychological perspectives.
And I'm looking forward to being able to offer clients another way of working together.
Sometimes we need space to talk.
Sometimes we want to practise new responses.
Sometimes we aren't quite sure what we need yet.
All of those are valid starting points.
What Will Counselling at Rooted Calm Look Like?
From November, following successful qualification, I plan to offer one-to-one integrative counselling sessions online and in person at the Consultancy Centre in Branksome.
Sessions will provide a confidential, supportive environment where we can explore whatever you would like to bring.
Counselling will be available on a per-session basis, rather than through the structured six-session hypnotherapy package.
Counselling session prices:
Online: £75 per session
In person: £85 per session
Hypnotherapy will continue to be available through my personalised six-session package, both online and in person in Parkstone.
Not Sure Which Approach Is Right for You?
You don't need to have everything figured out before getting in touch.
You might already know exactly what you'd like support with.
Or perhaps you're simply aware that something doesn't feel quite right and you'd like a space to explore it.
Both are good reasons to begin a conversation.
At Rooted Calm, everything starts with a free, no-obligation 15-minute consultation call.
This gives us a chance to talk about what you're experiencing, what you're hoping for, and whether hypnotherapy or counselling might be a suitable approach.
And if another type of support would be more appropriate, we can discuss that too.
