What Happens in a First Hypnotherapy Session?
Starting hypnotherapy for the first time can feel exciting, but it can also bring up questions.
Will I still be in control?
What if I cannot relax?
What if I do not know what to say?
What if hypnosis does not work for me?
These are completely normal questions.
A first hypnotherapy session is not about performing relaxation perfectly. It is about creating a safe, supportive space where we can begin understanding what you are experiencing and what kind of support might help.
We Start With a Conversation
Before any hypnotherapy begins, we talk.
We explore what has brought you to the session, what you would like support with, and what you would like to feel or experience differently.
This might include anxiety, confidence, fear, stress, sleep, emotional regulation, grief, change, or a specific event you are preparing for.
You only need to share what feels comfortable. There is no pressure to explain everything perfectly.
You Stay in Control
One of the biggest myths about hypnotherapy is that you lose control.
You do not.
Hypnotherapy is a relaxed and focused state. You can hear my voice. You can move. You can speak. You can open your eyes. You can stop at any time.
Most people describe the experience as relaxing, calming, or similar to the peaceful state between being awake and asleep.
But everyone experiences hypnosis differently, and that is okay.
Creating Safety First
In many first sessions, we begin by creating a safe place visualisation.
This is an imagined place where you can feel calmer, steadier, and more supported. It might be somewhere real or completely imagined. It might be outdoors, indoors, simple, detailed, peaceful, cosy, or spacious.
The safe place gives your mind and body a resource to return to, both during sessions and in everyday life.
This can be especially helpful if you are working with anxiety, fear, overwhelm, or emotional stress.
Personalised Recordings
After the session, I usually send you a recording of the hypnotherapy part.
This means you can listen again at home between sessions.
Repetition can help strengthen the work because your mind and body become more familiar with the calmer response we are practising.
Some clients listen daily. Others listen a few times a week. We can talk about what feels realistic and supportive for you.
What If I Cannot Relax?
You do not need to worry about this.
Hypnotherapy is not about forcing yourself into deep relaxation. Some people relax deeply straight away. Others remain more aware. Some notice thoughts coming and going. Some feel light, heavy, emotional, peaceful, or simply quiet.
There is no perfect way to experience it.
The most important thing is that the session feels safe, respectful, and supportive.
